Immensity of Silence – not a tremble,
No flutter, not a flicker in the Void…
Came, flourished, sank – completely unremembered,
Into the Silence – thoroughly destroyed!
When I shared this little piece of poetry with my friends, it dropped like a stone, into complete silence (ha-ha!), which was a bit puzzling for me. In my mind, it expresses the joyful moment of grand realization, the death of “self”. But I simply forgot how frightening the words like “unremembered” and “destroyed” were to my own conditioned self not so long ago!
We want to be “remembered”, we want to be “important”, our existence needs to be valued, reflected, acknowledged by “the society”, otherwise we are so … what? What happens if no one thinks we are important? What happens if no one remembers? If no one comes to your funerals?
Is your very existence voided if not thoroughly acknowledged by “the society”? And what we mean by “the society”, how we actually “remembered”? Fleeting words, likes, comments, number of followers whom you don’t even know? The way your loved ones remember you – and what somebody else’s thoughts have to do with YOU, really?
I like these words by Eckart Tolle:
“What will be left of all the fearing and wanting associated with your problematic life situation that every day takes up most of your attention? A dash, one or two inches long, between the date of birth and date of death on your gravestone. To the egoic self, this is a depressing thought. To you, it is liberating.”
Meditating on being “completely unremembered” and “thoroughly destroyed” as actually very liberating! Initially, the conditioned pattern of thinking and fearing will go into a panic mode. But if you stay with it, observing the rise of emotions, staying present to the arising grand nonsense that you absorbed mostly from the media, the panic will start to subside.
If you keep staying with it, periodically questioning the truth of every pathetic statement jumping into your mind, it will eventually clear up, replaced by the real Peace. And then, you are free to be “remembered” or not, to be “acknowledged” or not… You can just play your games, sing your songs, do your doings, from your Real Source, FREE! Whichever way your existence is reflected by the others, it has nothing to do with your real self!
